Disclaimers:
- We fully support public education (as we are both public educators ourselves) and cherish the growth and development our children have experienced while attending public schools.
- We wholeheartedly believe that education begins at home. In the earliest stages of development, children begin to absorb, mimic, and become what they are seeing modeled and ‘taught’ at home. Education begins at home – wherever that home may be.
- We fully acknowledge the privilege our own children have in coming from a home where the above and the following thinking exists AND we are extremely aware this is not the case in many homes (the reason we both went into public education – but I will save that for another post)!
It’s possible our children do not necessarily agree, but we think learning should happen EVERYWHERE! We have always looked for every opportunity to teach our children about this world we call home – learning about how we can preserve the beauty that surrounds us, how we can interact with and learn from those who are not like us, how we can gain an understanding of the way things work – these are all a part of our daily conversations! There are moments we stop to observe something we would otherwise ignore. There are moments we seek out the unfamiliar or strange to expand our understanding. There are moments we simply wait for a teachable moment – perhaps it’s a new word OR a discussion about how to problem solve different situations OR how a commercial’s propaganda plays a role in the way our society behaves (yes, we go there). Education is fluid and constant and expected in our home – it’s just what we do! We have encouraged our children to ask questions (and, listen, this can backfire FOR SURE), to ponder, to explore, to wonder, to try new things, and to seek answers – this is how they learn and this is how we educate on the road.
